To perform a thorough assessment we require background information from parents/caregivers in relation to the child’s early development and presentation within the home and social settings. On the day of the assessment parents are asked to fill in background information forms and other parental questionnaires. These can be completed in the waiting room while the child is being assessed by the examiner in the assessment room and clinic gym.
As part of the assessment, the examiner will use a variety of standardised measures, many of which are based on the biological sex of the child. The child’s motor skills will be examined. They should therefore wear clothing and footwear which allows them to comfortably engage in physical activities such as hopping and sprinting. If the child usually wears glasses, they should wear glasses on the day of the assessment.
Following the completion of the assessment, feedback is given to the parents/caregivers via an interview which can be in-person or via zoom. This will take place at an agreed time on the same day as the assessment.
A written comprehensive assessment report is sent to the parents/caregivers within four weeks of the assessment.
Occupational Therapy Housing Assessments
Some of our occupational therapists do environmental assessment for residences.
Housing assessments take place within the person’s own home which can be a private residence, communal or residential facility.
Environmental assessments can be completed with a person, school or college.
For housing and environmental assessments, the occupational therapist must see both the person with the disability and the home/facility to be adapted. Exceptions can be made if a person is in acute care/hospital. The occupational therapist will liaise with the acute facility for medical reports and reports of the persons functional abilities.
